Growing More Than a Garden at Bluff Park

What began as a fun visit to the local community garden has blossomed into a thriving garden oasis in the backyard of Glenwood’s Bluff Park residence. Inspired by the joy and satisfaction they experienced helping in the community space, the residents expressed interest in creating a garden of their own. With determination, teamwork, and a lot of heart, that idea became a reality.

Behind the Bluff Park home was an overgrown, weedy patch of land that had been largely unused. The residents, however, saw something different. With encouragement from their residential managers and house staff, they rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They took the lead, clearing brush, pulling weeds, and preparing the space for planting. With the support and guidance of staff who genuinely care and are committed to helping our adults thrive, the garden began to take shape.

Today, that once-forgotten corner of the yard is full of life. Rows of vegetables and herbs are thriving under the summer sun. The garden includes green tomatoes, squash, radishes, peppers, onions, corn, watermelon, beans, rosemary, carrots, two fig trees, and more. It has become a space filled with color, growth, and purpose.

The garden represents more than just a collection of plants. It stands as a symbol of what can happen when people are given the tools, encouragement, and opportunity to create something meaningful. The residents take great pride in their garden, tending it daily. They water, weed, and check the plants with care. They recognize what they have built and are proud of the results.

They are already beginning to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Fresh vegetables have made their way into meals, including bell peppers in a garden salad and fried green tomatoes served straight from the vine. These simple dishes carry a deep sense of accomplishment and pride.

Glenwood is incredibly proud of the residents for their hard work and dedication. We are equally grateful to the residential managers and staff whose compassion and support make experiences like this possible. These team members do far more than oversee daily routines. They help create spaces where adults can grow, thrive, and feel truly at home.

At Glenwood’s Bluff Park home, the garden is not just about food. It is about purpose. It is about care. It is about community. Most of all, it is about joy.
