Sibshop: Sibling Workshop

****Postponed until the Fall****

Glenwood will be hosting its first Sibshop event on June 23rd from 10:00 – 2:00 for children ages 7-11. This event will be led Dr. Mary-Kate Carey, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LBA; Jessica DelGreco, MS, BCBA; Lauren Nordberg MS, BCBA; and Kristen Jones, BS, RBT.

Sibshops are best described as opportunities for siblings of children with health and developmental needs to obtain peer support and education within a recreational context. They reflect an agency’s commitment to the well-being of the family member most likely to have the longest-lasting relationship with the person with support needs. However, for the young people who attend them and the energetic people who run them, Sibshops are best described as events.

Sibshops are lively, pedal-to-the-metal celebrations of the many contributions made by siblings of kids with support needs. Sibshop’s acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with support needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so-good thing, and for many somewhere in between. They reflect a belief that siblings have much to offer one another-if they are given a chance. The Sibshop model intersperses information and discussion activities with games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide ability range), cooking or other recreational activities, and support guests with and without disabilities who may teach participants new skills, such as juggling, or arts.
