Glenwood awarded three different grants related to arts and music
It’s been said, “Art is as natural as sunshine and as vital as nourishment.” Thanks to the Alabama State Council on the Arts, Glenwood has seen a lot more sunshine. The state agency recently awarded Glenwood three different grants related to arts and music, for the benefit of children and adults served by the organization.
The first grant created more art opportunities for preschoolers served through Glenwood’s Mallie M. Ireland Children’s Center. This program provides applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for children ages 2 through 7 who have an autism diagnosis. The second grant provided art classes for young boys who have emotional challenges served through Glenwood’s Lakeview School. The last grant, titled “Summer Music and Movement Series,” helped Glenwood provide drumming and dance sessions for various groups of children and teenagers served.
“We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Alabama State Council on the Arts,” said Christy Castleberry, Chief of Staff for Glenwood. “These grants help us provide services that aren’t typically funded by other entities. Research also strongly supports the use of art and music in providing therapy to those with autism and other behavioral health needs. Participation in these activities improves social skills, strengthens gross motor skills, and improves quality of life overall.”
The Alabama State Council on the Arts is the official state agency for the support and development of the arts in Alabama. The group works to expand and preserve the state’s cultural resources by supporting nonprofit arts organizations, schools, colleges, units of local government and individual artists.
